Rob Observing at Las Campanas (Apr 5-17, 2002)

This trip to Las Campanas was a whole lot more pleasant than the previous one. All flights connected smoothly, and 23 hours after Rob left home, he was at the observatory.

Below two pictures of the two 6.5 meter telescopes at Las Campanas. Rob was using the right one, called the Baade telescope, which is shown in close-up below.

The control room of this brand new telescope is quite clean and organized, but mostly it is quite overwhelming with all the monitors. Fortunately, it was the job of the operator to keep an eye on those. Rob only had to keep an eye on four...

A view of the 6.5 meters of mirror. The mirror sits in big dish, under which Rob is standing.

Allthough clouds make for beautiful sunsets, boring sunsets with blue skies are much preferred.

After two nights on the Baade telescope, and one night of rest in between, Rob started at the 40 inch Swope telescope.
