| Nov 17, 2002 | First haircut We had cut his bangs or his sides before, but twoday was the day for his first haircut. It proved to be quite a challenge, Rob was chasing after Alex for quite a while and seized each moment when Alex had his head still to cut off one more piece of hair. After a lot of chasing Alex' hair was in tip-top shape for his upcoming birthday! |
| Nov 10, 2002 | Throwing Alex has found out how to throw things. At this point this is still very cute, because he is still a little clumsy at it and sometimes the object flies backwards rather than forwards, but soon he will be good at throwing things and we will have to worry about him breaking things. |
| Nov 6, 2002 | Walking! Alex can walk! Today he walked from one sofa all the way across our carpet to a chair, a distance of about 6 feet (2 meter). His walk is reminiscent of Frankenstein's, but he manages it nonetheless! His preferred mode of transportation, though, is crawling, because that is much faster than walking... For now... |
| Oct 5, 2002 | First steps Alex has mastered the art of making steps. Today, he made two steps in a row. Not quite walking yet, but he is getting ready! |
| Aug 31, 2002 | Standing by himself Every now and then, when Alex is standing up, leaning against the sofa and playing with a toy, he will be so absorbed in playing with his toy that he forgets to lean on the sofa... and suddenly he is standing on by himself without holding on! |
| Aug 11, 2002 | Mama!!! Alex has added the m to his increasing vocabulary, and now often says mama. Now that he has mastered mama, dada (and papa), Rob and Cindy are eagerly awaiting the day that Alex figures out who is who. |
| July 28, 2002 | First steps along furniture While holding on to a couch or the fence we have around the fireplace, Alex is making a few careful steps. |
| July 21, 2002 | Stand up by himself holding on to furniture Alex has mastered the trick of standing up by himself, either using an ottoman, a chair, or Rob or Cindy's legs. But his favorite time and place to stand is in his crib, when he is supposed to go to bed. And better yet is of course standing up in the middle of the night, and then yelling out loud so that Rob or Cindy has to get up to put him back on his back to sleep. |
| July 20, 2002 | First steps Holding daddy's hands, Alex made his first steps. Quite a few steps too, as he traveled about 20 feet (6 m). And all that despite a fever (102 F/39 C), which was his first fever as far as we know. Because of his fever, Alex was a little grumpy, and he took more naps than usual. |
| July 14, 2002 | Crawling It looked like he was about to start crawling for quite a while, but on le quatorze juillet he finally did it. All it took was the proper motivation: a piece of paper. |
| July 11, 2002 | Dada!!! A great moment for Rob, but of course Alex does not yet associate his dada sound with daddy yet... Anyway, Rob is really waiting for the Dutch version of dada: papa |
| July 6, 2002 | Alex can sit himself up Alex was sitting on all fours, when he decided to push himself only back and sideways. He was very surprised that he found himself sitting as a result. But he liked it a lot, and he triumphantly repeated this major feat several times. |
| July 4, 2002 | KaGaKaGa Alex has started producing consonants, mostly K's and G's so far. Listen to Alex' first consonants. |
| June 10, 2002 | On all fours Alex is taking the first steps towards crawling. He now greatly enjoys being on all fours and rocking back and forth! |
| June 6, 2002 | Embracing Reach Alex has figured out that he can let us know that he wants to be held, or picked up, or moved to a different toy by looking at us and expectingly reaching out his arms. And who can refuse the cutest baby in the world! |
| June 3, 2002 | Rolling Back to Front Alex has finally discovered that he is not as helpless as a turtle when lying on his back, and that with only a little effort he can roll from his back to his front. He seems to have forgotten how to roll from his front to his back, since he has not done that since the one time fluke on January 23. |
| May 3, 2002 | Sitting up Although still somewhat unsteady, Alex has mastered the skill of sitting unsupported, with either Mom or Dad closeby to keep him from falling over. |
| Mar 29, 2002 | A tooth! All of a sudden a little white ridge has appeared in Alex's mouth: his first tooth. It's on the bottom jaw. His second tooth is already getting ready for its appearance. See a picture of Alex' first teeth |
| Mar 16, 2002 | From one hand to the other. Alex transfered a rattle from one hand into the other. Without even looking! |
| Feb 28, 2002 | Reach out and touch Alex has figured out that hands can be used not only for waving aimlessly around, but also for touching and grabbing things (check out this picture of Alex reaching out). |
| Feb 15, 2002 | Sucking on his Thumb Alex has been sucking on his fist for a while, but today he actually sucked on his thumb. When he started sucking on his fist, he would only do it when his fist would happen to pass his mouth, but lately moves his fist to his mouth intentionally (except when he is aggrevated, then he seems to forget how to do it, or perhaps he is just too busy waving his arms around to suck on his fist). |
| Jan 23, 2001 | Rolling Front to Back Alex's first roll was not very elegant: he pushed himself up high, and then he toppled over to one side. With his head already turned, he decided to turn his legs as well, making his first turning over a fact! |
| Dec 27, 2001 | Smile We are not entirely sure of the date of Alex's first smile. But Grammie and Grandpa, Opa and Oma, and Rob and Cindy all got to see Alex's smile during the last week December. About a month later, his smile was caught on film. |
