Alex is Doing Well

Alex has discovered his voice. He is experimenting with various kinds of sounds, from a melodious aaah-oooh-aaah to an uncomfortably loud scream. Fortunately, he's reserved that one only for when he is really unhappy. His happy sounds are a lot more fun. He is also into expressions lately. In just a matter of seconds he can go through a whole string of expressions, from frown to smile to surprise to sad.

His feeding and sleeping patterns also continue to change. At the moment, he usually wakes up at about 7:30 am and wants to eat immediately! He's a great alarm clock! After the breakfast, he prefers to eat again around 10 am, and lunch should be served around 12:30 am. While he is digesting his lunch, he likes to sleep for a little over four hours, to wake up at 5 pm for an early dinner. But that does not last him long, and by 7:30 pm he wants the second course. The second portion gives him the energy he needs to make it through the evening activities, such as making more faces, crying and cooing, grunting, and kicking arms and legs. He really does not like being put to bed by then, every time we have tried he starts a little tantrum. All this activity makes him hungry again, and by 10 pm or so it's time for an evening snack. Then it is really time to go to bed, and although he still does not seem to want to go, at least he is tired enough that he falls asleep... but usually only after four or five cycles of waking up, starting to scream, being comforted by one of us, and going back to sleep. But once he is asleep, he sleeps for 5 or six hours, to wake up once more during the night at around 3:30 am. All this is of course a lot better than his initial pattern of wanting to eat every 1.5 to 2 hours, even at night.

Great Ways to Sleep

Alex has found a mysterious way to sleep. Hands motionlessly suspended in mid-air...

The Grippy Guessing Game has a winner!

The only person who guessed November 19 as the day Alex was born, was Rob... But he will only get an honorable mention for his correct guess. We have given a box of Grippy Guessing Game Godiva Chocolate to Richard, who was only a day off, and who had Alex's length exactly right and was close in weight. But it was a tight race, as you can see in final score.

An interesting bit of trivia is that Alex's birth weight (at 4320 grams or roughly 9 lb 8.5 oz) was heavier than the heaviest guess. As you can see in Alex's growth charts, he is still growing fast. After 4 weeks he was already wearing 3 to 6 months clothing.
